Interesting thoughts lads. I like the podcasts because the shallow thought (memes(clichés) structures on twitter do an incredible amount of damage to the club and to thinking about the Arsenal, hope you do some more soon. Stay on the bridge George!
Our midfield keeps getting so stretched, similar thinness we saw against ManUre (goal three) popped up against City (goal three).
Özil situ is so baffling, its almost beyond words…surely it must be politiks within the club( UE v MÖ?), Mesut gets a load of acki-kacki for not tracking back but if we watch plenty of other lads do the same, like theres no urgency. Maybe UE has the dressing room by his fingernails only? Has he lost it already?
I understand why he might not want to rely on Rambo(because hes slinging his hook), but my word, to leave a guy like that on the bench seems potty to me.Both of them? Nuts?
I wrote to my bro before the game about the selection, but the time his reply came back we were 1-0 down.46 seconds. When we look at the goal again, our lads look light weight. Even Kos looks sort of shy and not the tough bloke he was?
Luckily all things change otherwise we can only concentrate on this moment..top 4? No.EL? No. What then more of this next season and UE will be gone, as George said, whose coming in then?
Considering last year was Arsènes worse, we still made a final( after a tough semi) and went to the EL semi, and ran it bloody close.
I agree with George about the relativity and Arsène, but I also still think Arsène stays in the equation as hes looming over UE at the moment, and thats based on last year only. Yes, we wanted to go to another level, so we have to ask ( and you brought it up in someways re the monetary situ at AFC) are we only going to get a manger over what was AW last level by having a sugar daddy to pay and make it attractive?
Play our best players, and for them to play to their best standard and to be allowed to play their best- all the farting around of the back seems to make everyone nervous, which isnt good, the thin midfield and the lack of creation for PEA and Lacca to finish on… itas not a shambles it just needs a bit of pulling together ( he said reducing the coplex world of football down to a few words!).
If we go into a wilderness like Liverpool then AW will still be blamed? It seems ingrained.
I’m as lost as George is , there wasn’t enough of anything to say Emery had a plan for the second half. It’s worth noting that Pep does have an unbeaten record on him but Ithe reaction to the first half was so lame that there’s literally NOTHING to even speculate about. We failed at both of the primary goals any football team has and there wasn’t anything done to suggest any reactivity to state of play.
Mourinho of all people fit Ozil into his system and this especially toxic version of Mourinho would apparently still have him so all the excuses are rubbish. How are we making the case that 3/4 of his peak form (including germany) managers are wrong I’m starting to believe the rumours of Emery carrying a grudge against the “stars” but it’s so absurd… as if Ozil is so idiosyncratic that he cant be made to work. Emery clearly knows football, but to believe some fans means He’s choosing the wrong time to want to experiment and bed in his supposed “style” .
The real problem with defending Emery here is he’s doing none or very little of what he said. He hasn’t consistently done anything to say he has a clear vision. After the start we’ve had, injuries don’t scrap the basics of football. People can speculate about the long term or what his philosophy is but none of that correlates to what he’s doing now. I said on twitter before but any other manger of note would have a general impression on the team, win or lose, yet here he is with a wealth of players to implement anything he wants … but we are having twitterati run interference for his lack of tactical throughput. Teams/Squads are not that set in stone, not at this level. Are we certain it’s the players who have to adapt?
He shouldn’t need a perfect squad for his “system” he can only have what Wenger did comparatively, the beauty of systems is that you figure out early on what works or doesn’t work. You can tweak. You can openly claim how your goals and actions relate. Maybe he’s overreactive as some have said *shrugs*. Still people pre-assuming Emery’s intentions still cant say what if anything prevents him from working with what he has. Sure injuries. But what’s new for an Arsenal manager. Unwilling to accept the tactical foibles they must make a previously good team the worst team possible, literally for this manger (disgusting logic) and continually push to future reward for their faith further and further away.
I have no such difficulty. Arsenal results are mixed, I’m used to that. If Emery wants to work without a creative midfield, fine, but don’t make excuse for a self caused problem. If he’s good enough to field this side we shouldn’t have to guess at his currently workaround or downgrade the players. He cant have one half of the solution only to complain about his toolset (he’s not but his public defenders are). He’s the only one with the resources to both cause AND solve his current problem… and to get swayed by his master plan when he clearly isn’t capable, (by the admission of those who claim to understand ) is stupid. No manger digs a hole he doesn’t intend to dig out of. To go to the “we don’t have the players” card is ridiculous. Even more so if Emery is more focused on a workrate/teamplay based side than a flair or token player side. By definition that’s about discipline, hard to say professionals at this level cant do discipline, every team in the top tier can.
Shotta keeps pointing out the lack of consensus. That all lead back to management on and off the pitch, When the people who watch the football cant agree on what to disagree on something is massively wrong. Yeah we’ve had directionless play under Wenger, but to me it wasn’t half as bad a taboo to question exactly what he was doing. Even if people hated Wengerball they knew exactly what the hated it (or at least we think so). George is saying it well – Emery has to earn the good faith. George wants consistency, all I want was is a clearer intent, a much smaller time frame, within the 90 mins, he’s had moments this season where things seemed to work or of it didn’t we knew why. But i cannot abide by doubling down on tactics that appear to me to be passive. Failing is one thing but doing nothing is another.

Brilliant . The eloquence alone of your response has made this podcast worthwhile.
